Ask an Angel Anything: Panel Discussion for Founders

To celebrate the launch of Knowledge Hub, we have assembled an all-star panel of angel investors to chat with founders about what it takes to raise funding from angels.

In this session, you will hear answers to questions like:

  • The process that angel investors use to select startups to pitch to their group
  • What angels look for in a company
  • How that actual investment in a company works
  • What the due diligence process is and how you can be best prepared for it

Joining us on the panel:

Julia Elvidge 
Julia Elvidge is the past President and co-founder of Chipworks, a company that sold patent and technology intelligence related products and services to large international electronics companies. After selling Chipworks to its largest competitor in 2016, Julia remained active in the tech community by working with companies and founders as an advisor and investor. Additionally, Julia is a member of the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors and sits on boards in the tech and investment space, including ventureLAB’s Hardware Catalyst Initiative advisory board and the Capital Angel Network.

Bryan Duarte 
Bryan Duarte is a social venturist, entrepreneur, angel investor and a licensed professional engineer. He is the co-founder and managing partner at BlackTech Capital, a pre-seed fund in Toronto that invests in Black and other underrepresented entrepreneurs focused on clean tech. He is also the founder and CEO of Enliten Energy Services Corporation, which provides sustainable resource metering solutions. His extensive experience in the energy, clean tech and sustainability sectors has taught him that sustainability is about more than just solving technological challenges.

Benton Leong
Benton is an angel investor in the Golden Triangle Angel Network (GTAN), located in Waterloo Region.  Benton has held teaching and research positions in computer science at UC, Berkeley and the University of Waterloo. He co-founded four companies, including Radical Flow and Maplesoft. He is the pitch coach for Team Canada in the Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship International Competition, where in 2019 Canada beat seven other countries, including U.S., Japan, and Israel, to win both the overall gold prize and the overall silver prize.
